i feel bit stifled

最近学んだ新しい英単語を

物忘れが激しくなった自分用の覚書として残しておこうと思う。



まずはstifle。

sti·fle

v. sti·fled, sti·fling, sti·fles

v. tr.

To interrupt or cut off (the voice, for example).

To keep in or hold back; repress: stifled my indignation.

To kill by preventing respiration; smother or suffocate.



v. intr.

To feel smothered or suffocated by or as if by close confinement in a stuffy room.

To die of suffocation.



日本語訳はこちら：

sti･fle [stáifl]

━━ vt. 窒息させる; 息苦しくさせる; （火を）消す; 握りつぶす, 鎮圧する, おし［かみ］殺す.



━━ vi. 窒息する; 息が詰まる; いぶる.

この単語は宇多田ヒカルさんがMTVのインタビューの際に使われてた単語。



確か"I feel bit stifled in Japan"

訳：日本では少し息苦しく感じることがある。

（文字通りではなく、少し窮屈だとかそういう意味合いで…）

そんな感じで使っておられたと記憶している。





お次はabject。

ab·ject

adj.

Brought low in condition or status. See Synonyms at mean2.

Being of the most contemptible kind: abject cowardice.

Being of the most miserable kind; wretched: abject poverty.



日本語訳は：

abject

a. 落ちぶれた, 悲惨な, なさけない; 卑劣な.

これは相方から習った。

一番よく使われるのはabject poverty（悲惨な貧困）という表現だそう。

少し固めで会話よりもニュースや新聞で使われることが多い単語らしい。





お次はhindsight。

綴りだけ見るとヒンドサイト、と読んでしまいそうだけど

ハインサイトと読む。

hind·sight

n.

Perception of the significance and nature of events after they have occurred.

The rear sight of a firearm.



日本語は：

hind･sight

目先のきかないこと, あと知恵.

これも相方から習った。

しかーっし、例文が思いつかない。

In hindsight, it would have been better to do it the other way

訳：後になって考えてみると、別のやり方を起用した方がよかったような気がする。

とかそんな感じかと思うけど。
